The seventh and last developmental skill in the WIN-TIRI format is I – Initiate
Last week we completed the first six skills in our WIN-TIRI format. We focused on a child’s ability to WIN – Be Watchful, Intentional, and Noisy, and also Turn Take, Imitate, and Respond. The seventh step is to teach children how to Initiate. We want children to initiate communication with others. Some children are able to respond to the language of others but have difficulty initiating conversation. They tend to be more passive and quiet even though they have the skills to talk. Go here to read my blog post on teaching a child to initiate.
Helping a child learn to initiate.

Some children are simply quieter than others. Some find it more challenging to initiate language and conversation with peers and adults. We are not going to change the personalities of children. Kids are who they are, and that is absolutely fine. But some children just need a little boost of self-confidence to initiate language with others. So much of a child’s ability to initiate language depends on the listener and our ability to wait and watch what the child will do to get his needs met. We need children to feel heard.
